The Antioch Review 75th Anniversary Part I

NewPages.com, a website devoted to literary magazines, independent publishers and other writing resources, recently published a glowing review of The Antioch Review Summer 2016 issue, Part I of its 75th Anniversary issue.

Tamara Miles' review invites the reader to embark on a literary journey that revisits 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s passages.

Ms. Miles observes “we did not hear the message presented so clearly in the writings of people like Ralph Ellison [1943], who laid before us in no uncertain terms our racial disparities and injustices” and that “[w]e do not know now much better than we did then, the answers to whether ‘the resources of American industry [should] be used to promote cooperation among the world’s nations; or shall they be used, under pressure of monopoly imperialism, to fight for economic domination of the world and thus dynamite security and peace’” (“Problems of the Peace”, Lewis Corey 1943).

Ms. Miles echoes the concerns penned by the founding editorial board noting, “We have lost some of our intellectual footing. We cannot afford . . . to be ‘indifferent to the social struggle or to the blackout of learning, literature, and the arts which accompanies defeat in that struggle’” (Editorial 1941).
